Italy launched a new 10-year bond which sold at a yield of 5.82 per cent, the lowest since March.Thursday, August 30, 2012
(Bloomberg) -- Economic confidence in the euro area fell more than economists forecast in August as leaders struggled to rein in the sovereign debt crisis and the region’s slump deepened.
An index of executive and consumer sentiment in the 17- nation euro area dropped to 86.1 from 87.9 in July, the European Commission in Brussels said today. That’s the lowest since August 2009. Economists had forecast a decline to 87.5, the median of 26 estimates in a Bloomberg News survey showed. In Germany, jobless claims rose for a fifth month in August.

Markets hang on arguments for and against further monetary stimulus in anxiously awaited speech.
QE or not QE? That is the question the financial markets are looking for Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke to answer in his anxiously awaited speech to the annual confab of policy makers and academics Friday in Jackson Hole, Wyo. But, Hamlet-like, the Fed chief may not provide a simple response.

In part, that is because the central bank is the target of the slings and arrows of the outrageous fortune of being subject to political pressures while in the pursuit of the largely academic question of the course of monetary policy. Both from the political campaign and from within the Fed, the chairman is being criticized

UPDATED 08/30/2012
After announcing this week that Friday would be her last day on Good Morning America before she began an extended medical leave, Robin Roberts moved up the date of her departure to Thursday, reports ABC News

"I'm having to move up my schedule," the anchor, 51, said at the top of the show on Thursday. Roberts explained that she will first fly home to Mississippi to be with her ailing, 88-year-old mother, Lucimarian, and her family in the Hurricane Isaac zone.

Roberts will then be treated for myelodysplastic syndrome (commonly called "MDS") and is starting preparations to undergo a bone-marrow transplant.

Roberts's sister, Sally, donated the bone marrow, and, looking radiant but concerned for her sister, said on Thursday's show, "Recovery time is so quick."

This week, leading to Roberts's farewell, Good Morning America shared the stories of others battling MDS.

No College Degree Required: $100,000 Jobs
By Sharon Epperson | CNBC – Mon, Aug 27, 2012
It may not be a piece of cake, but despite stagnant wages for the majority of U.S. workers, making a six-figure salary without earning a college degree can be achieved.

From overseeing the creation of beautiful breads, pastries and desserts for hotels and restaurants as an executive pastry chef to (surprisingly!) becoming a nuclear power reactor operator conducting procedures that start up or shut down the plant, having a college degree in these occupations is not mandatory.
Personal trainers, massage therapists, and handymen are also among the jobs where top earners with no college degree can receive annual pay that exceeds $100,000, according to PayScale.com. To compile this list, PayScale.com surveyed its salary and career database, covering about 12,000 jobs in over 1,000 industries.

"A six-figure salary is not typical in these jobs, but it is possible," says PayScale.com's Katie Bardaro. "You need to be a top performer in your field to earn these salaries."

Many are to blame for the UFC 151 cancellation, but an added side effect is it will now be harder to trust what the UFC or its fighters say.
There is a twist to the Henderson-Jones-UFC 151-saga that hasn’t been addressed much until now.

According to Fighters Only Magazine, Dan Henderson was actually injured three weeks ago, not late last week, meaning there was a much earlier indication that his Sept. 1 matchup against UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones could be in jeopardy.

By EDDIE PELLS, AP National Writer
NEW YORK (AP) — Over the first two days of the U.S. Open, the world's largest tennis stadium turned into the world's biggest bore.
There were 10 matches in 23,000-seat Arthur Ashe Stadium, all of them decided in straight sets.
There were 24 sets, only three of them as close as 6-4.
There were 191 games, 144 of them won by the players who advanced.
After one of Tuesday's more emphatic blowouts, defending champion Novak Djokovic summed up the No. 1 mission for favorites in their early matches at the year's final Grand Slam.
"It's important for me," he said, "to try to be as economical with the time I spend on the court as possible."

Beverly Hills Cop could be heading for the small screen! And Eddie Murphy could well be appearing in the spin-off, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Eddie Murphy and Shawn Ryan are currently touting a TV version of the popular movie franchise to a number of broadcast networks. It's unclear which of the original characters will remain but it has been reported that Murphy will have an onscreen role in the spin-off, with his original character Axel Foley now being the chief of police in Detroit and Foley's son being the central character.

Back in November, Murphy told Rolling Stone what he was planning for the show and revealed that a fourth movie was out of the question: "I'd do the pilot, show up here and there. None of the movie scripts were right; it was trying to force this premise. If you have to force

Around the Triangle, with so many community banks and a handful of big banks fighting for every deposit, the report from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. could not have come at a better time. FDIC reports there are only 10.9 percent of FDIC-insured banks had net losses during the second quarter, down from 15.7 percent a year earlier. Also, the number of problem institutions fell from 772 to 732 during the quarter.
Also, the average return on assets for the entire group of banks increased to 0.99 percent from 0.85 percent a year ago. For giant financial institutions such as Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC) and JP MorganChase & Co. WASHINGTON | Wed Aug 29, 2012
A man pushes his shopping cart down an aisle at a Home Depot store in New York, July 29, 2010. REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton(Reuters) - The economy fared slightly better than initially thought in the second quarter, but the pace of growth remained too slow to shut the door on further monetary easing from the Federal Reserve.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 1.7 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said in its second estimate on Wednesday as stronger export growth offset a pull-back in restocking by businesses wary of sluggish domestic demand.

That was up from last month's 1.5 percent estimate and in line with economists' expectations. The economy grew at a 2.0 percent pace in the January-March period.

Maria Sharapova withdrew from two summer hard-court tournaments because of a stomach issue, but she insists she’s all better now. She definitely looked it in her 6-2, 6-2 opening-round win over Hungarian Melinda Czink on the first day of the U.S. Open.

The French Open champion was moving extremely well and hitting a clean ball off both sides. It was an encouraging performance for Sharapova, who hasn’t played a match since the Olympics.

Sharapova says she felt pain in her stomach in London before her Olympic final against Serena Williams, which she lost 6-0, 6-1, but dismissed any insinuation that the illness affected her play there. The pain worsened when she returned to North America to play the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

“I think it was some stomach bug,” she said. “But I thought it was getting better. Then I started eating like the normal Maria, and it wasn’t better.

Lindsay Lohan has often been accused of having sticky fingers — but so far, none of the charges against her has stuck.

Now she faces more jewel-fueled drama.
The Los Angeles Police Department considers her a suspect in the theft of $100,0000-worth of watches and sunglasses — and the “Herbie Fully Loaded” star could be facing serious jail time if she is found to have violated her probation, TMZ reported Monday night.
Lohan’s latest legal woes erupted last week when she and her assistant, Gavin Doyle, were party guests at the Hollywood Hills home of millionaire Sam Magid, who later called cops to report a jewel theft.
Lohan tried to leave the all-night party at around noon the next day, Aug. 20, but the owner realized several expensive watches and some sunglasses were missing before she got the chance.

[image]MADRID—Spain's economic recession deepened in the second quarter amid the country's largest-ever bank failure and a steep downturn in domestic spending that could sharpen as the government raises sales taxes starting next month.

Fresh figures Tuesday from the statistics institute INE for the second-quarter and 2011 suggest "the economy is much weaker than previously thought," said Tullia Bucco, an economist at UniCredit Research. "This risks weighing on the government's capacity to reach the fiscal targets set for this year and the next."

Tropical Storm Isaac is on the verge of becoming a Category 1 hurricane before it makes landfall, but forecasters say the biggest threat will be the rainfall and storm surge, not the wind.

Forecasters have projected landfall as early as tonight, a day short of the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu Monday said Isaac's path is similar to Katrina's and the anniversary has left much of the Gulf Coast on "a high level of anxiety."

Winds will be an issue initially when Isaac makes landfall with gusts up to 80 mph. Forecasters say the big threat will be the storm surge around New Orleans and Biloxi, Miss., where water might rise six to nine feet. The slow-moving storm is forecasted to hover over the Gulf Coast and could punish coastal areas with up to

Gold Is Going to $1,700 and Beyond Says Trader
Wiener Philharmoniker gold coins are pictured at the Ginza Tanaka store in TokyoBy Jeff Macke | Breakout 2012/8/27
After dominating the headlines for years it's been a tough slog for gold of late. The barbaric metal is getting outpaced by the broader equity markets so far in 2012 and has lost more than 5% over the last twelve months. According to Eric Wilkinson of Blue Group Trading, all of that is about to change.
Wilkinson's bullishness has both fundamental and technical reasoning. Technically last week saw big volumes in gold at $1,640 an ounce, followed by a $20 rip in almost a straight line. That makes $1,640 good support on a technical basis. It's where other traders will be putting money to work which creates natural price support.
The quick rise also forms the trader's fundamental view. Wilkinson and others think European countries have been huge sellers of gold to pay down their debts.
