A growing number of children are swallowing batteries, especially circular "button batteries," leading to thousands of emergency room visits each year and, in a few cases, deaths, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
From 1997 through 2010, nearly 30,000 young children up to age 4 were taken to emergency rooms for battery-related injuries, the report said, with more than half the cases involving button batteries.
Fourteen deaths from battery-related injuries were reported over that period in children ages 7 months to 3 years old.

Las Vegas drivers are seeing a surge in gas prices. Experts say they shouldn't be surprised about it.

"It's summer, people are traveling, the temperatures are very high and when there is a high demand for gas obviously the price goes up," said Cynthia Harris, spokesperson for AAA.

Over the past three weeks the price at the pumps has jumped nearly 30 cents a gallon in Las Vegas with the average price now at $3.70 a gallon.

That's still much cheaper than what motorists are paying in southern California. In Los Angeles according to AAA, prices are more than $4 a gallon.

But not everyone here is happy with our gas prices.

Police in New Jersey have reportedly shot and killed a man suspected of being involved in a deadly shootout inside a shopping plaza this morning.

Law enforcement officials say the three dead include the alleged gunman, according to WABC-TV.
Police responded to shots fired inside the Pathmark supermarket on Route 9 in Old Bridge, N.J., just before 4 a.m. There was a confrontation with the alleged gunman, WABC reported. There's no word on his motive.

An index of executive and consumer sentiment in the 17- nation euro area dropped to 86.1 from 87.9 in July, the European Commission in Brussels said today. That’s the lowest since August 2009. After announcing this week that Friday would be her last day on Good Morning America before she began an extended medical leave, Robin Roberts moved up the date of her departure to Thursday, reports ABC News

"I'm having to move up my schedule," the anchor, 51, said at the top of the show on Thursday. Roberts explained that she will first fly home to Mississippi to be with her ailing, 88-year-old mother, Lucimarian, and her family in the Hurricane Isaac zone.

Roberts will then be treated for myelodysplastic syndrome (commonly called "MDS") and is starting preparations to undergo a bone-marrow transplant.

Roberts's sister, Sally, donated the bone marrow, and, looking radiant but concerned for her sister, said on Thursday's show, "Recovery time is so quick."

This week, leading to Roberts's farewell, Good Morning America shared the stories of others battling MDS.

(Reuters) - The economy fared slightly better than initially thought in the second quarter, but the pace of growth remained too slow to shut the door on further monetary easing from the Federal Reserve.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 1.7 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said in its second estimate on Wednesday as stronger export growth offset a pull-back in restocking by businesses wary of sluggish domestic demand.

That was up from last month's 1.5 percent estimate and in line with economists' expectations. The economy grew at a 2.0 percent pace in the January-March period.

Maria Sharapova withdrew from two summer hard-court tournaments because of a stomach issue, but she insists she’s all better now. She definitely looked it in her 6-2, 6-2 opening-round win over Hungarian Melinda Czink on the first day of the U.S. Open.

The French Open champion was moving extremely well and hitting a clean ball off both sides. It was an encouraging performance for Sharapova, who hasn’t played a match since the Olympics.

Sharapova says she felt pain in her stomach in London before her Olympic final against Serena Williams, which she lost 6-0, 6-1, but dismissed any insinuation that the illness affected her play there. The pain worsened when she returned to North America to play the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
