Prince William has fuelled rumours that he and Kate Middleton are planning to have children soon after he accepted a baby present during a walkabout in Cambridge.

There has been speculation around the world that the couple - who married in April last year - are expecting.

And today, while meeting fans, Prince William, an RAF Search and Rescue pilot, gave the biggest hint yet that the couple could well be becoming proud parents soon.

The Duke of Cambridge was given a little baby romper suit with a picture of a helicopter and the words “Daddy’s little co-pilot”.

New mum Samantha Hill, 27, from Sudbury, Suffolk who made the present, had brought her daughter Beth, who is four weeks old tomorrow, to see the royals.

She said: “I made it for when his little one comes along, he’s a helicopter pilot so his baby will think his daddy is cool.

“When I gave it to him he said ‘I’ll keep that’ and handed it to his aide.”

In August there was a surge of bets on a royal baby for Kate and Wills next year with several three-figure bets, and one bet of £1,000, being placed.

The baby theme continued when Kate met another mother, Tessa Davies, 35, from Cambridge, who had given her son James the middle name William in honour of the Duke.

The Duchess tickled the baby's foot as she chatted to Ms Davies, who told the royal about her tribute to William.

"She said how cute he was.

"My son was due on April 29, their first wedding anniversary, and I wrote to William saying congratulations ahead of the anniversary and telling him I would give my son the middle name William because I'm such a fan of his and the Royal Family.

"He wrote me a lovely letter in reply, which hangs in my downstairs loo, thanking me for my support and I told Kate all this."

Kate spotted another baby, three-and-a-half month old Zachary Tiger Sargent, who was wearing a white romper suit.

Mum Laura said: "She asked what his name was and how old he was and shook his hand.

Earlier Kate had battled with the windy conditions as she showed off her new hairdo.

Less than 24 hours after debuting her new sweeping fringe and glossy locks, Kate revealed that's she's "not sure" about her new hairstyle as it took a battering from the windy weather.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were given a rapturous welcome as they began their tour of the city with hundreds of well-wishers lining the streets.

But it was the Duchess' new hairdo, believed to have been created by her favourite hairdresser Richard Ward, that was the talk of the day, after she showcased the new look at the National History Museum last night.

However, it may be a case of hair today, gone tomorrow, after today.

Speaking to fans Kate, 30, in a cream MaxMara coat and dress, hinted she was having trouble controlling her shorter new hairstyle in the wind.

Joanne Baldwin, 30, said. "I told her I loved her new hair style.

"She said: 'I'm not sure about it. It's a bit windy today.' I said don't worry, it looks lovely."
