By Associated Press, Updated: Saturday, August 4

DALLAS — Southwest Airlines’ attempt to thank its Facebook friends with a half-price ticket sale backfired when customers were inadvertently billed multiple times for a single flight — they’re not feeling the “luv.”

“No, it wasn’t a hack, it was just a technology glitch in our system that caused that,” duplicate bookings and billings to customers’ debit and credit cards, Ashley Dillon, a Southwest spokeswoman said Saturday.
The company became aware of the problem around 5 p.m. Friday, she said, when they experienced website slowdowns and saw that customers were having to repeatedly refresh pages to take advantage of the airlines’ one-day “luv2like” promotion.

Michael Phelps made one last climb to the top of the Olympic podium Saturday, made one last bow to have a gold medal ribbon wrapped around his neck and made one long, last glorious goodbye to the adoring fans at the London pool where he became the greatest Olympian of all time.
The Americans' 4x100 medley team won the gold medal Saturday with Phelps, competing in the final event of his career, swimming his typically dominant butterfly leg.
That gold medal was Phelps' 18th in the three Olympic Games beginning in 2004, and boosted his medal total to 22. Both are records for any Olympic sport and athlete.

After the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team crushed Nigeria by more than doubling its score, the Americans found themselves playing defense against accusations that their record-setting 156-73 rout was unsportsmanlike. Coach Mike Kryzewski denied that the Americans intended to embarrass their opponents. Instead, he said that the Nigerians could reasonably have been offended had his team had not played their hardest. "You have to take a shot every 24 seconds, and the shots we took happened to be hit," Kryzewski told reporters after the game. On top of scoring more points than any other Olympic team in a single game, the NBA players eclipsed the 79-point record of the largest margin of

Aug 3, 2012
(Reuters) - Three of Michael Jackson's siblings vowed on Friday to keep up their fight to have the pop star's will thrown out, but denied their efforts were motivated by money.
Janet, Randy and Rebbie Jackson said in an attorney's statement issued on their behalf that their aim was only to replace the executors of their brother's multimillion-dollar estate, who they accuse of mismanagement.

The statement followed two weeks of Jackson clan infighting, including a trip by family matriarch Katherine Jackson, 82, to Arizona in which she has said she was cut off from the outside world and was reported missing.

Remake of Arnold Schwarezenegger film suffers from muddled story and one-dimensional characters
AUGUST 2, 2012 NEW YORK DAILY NEWSColin Farrell’s in the hot seat for the remake ‘Total Recall.’
There’s something sadly poetic about a movie dealing with disappearing memories that vanishes from your mind while you watch it.
Yet that’s the only memorable thing about “Total Recall,” a remake of a schlocky 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle that, like this new version, was based on a 1960s Philip K. Dick short story.
Where that previous film had cartoonish effects and a Mars-set conclusion, this new one is filled with future-industrial grit and “Blade Runner”-esque squalor. Yet nothing sticks.

New polls out this week from the Pew Research Center and Quinnipiac University/CBS News/New York Times show the negative attacks on Mitt Romney taking a serious toll.

"By a 52 percent to 37 percent margin, more voters say they have an unfavorable than favorable view of Mitt Romney," according to Pew's analysis of the results. "The poll, conducted prior to Romney's recent overseas trip, represents the sixth consecutive survey over the past nine months in which his image has been in negative territory."

And forget all the complaints about party identification for these surveys being "too Democratic." The Pollster.com aggregation of all polling since April shows Romney's favorable/unfavorable ratings consistently underwater. As of today, he's seen more unfavorably than favorably by an average of 8 percentage points.

Get more pure politics at ABC News.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com

A look at the behavior from the Romney campaign and his allies suggests that they see some of the same things.

First, there are the ads that seek to portray Romney for who he is instead of who he isn't. His success at saving the 2002 Olympics as outlined in an ad paid for by the pro-Romney super PAC, Restore Our Future. And his "Believe in Our Future" spot that finally has Romney telling his story in his own voice.

Second, as Byron York, chief political correspondent for the Washington Examiner writes, Romney's speech in Colorado yesterday focused as much on his plans for the future instead of just on Obama's failures.

"On Thursday afternoon, there was Romney, addressing supporters in Golden, Colo., in front of a giant banner that said 'ROMNEY PLAN.' In his remarks, Romney criticized Obama; nothing wrong with that. But he laid out his larger purpose at the very beginning. 'Today, I come to talk about making things better,' Romney said, laying out his plan. 'If we do those five things, those simple five things ... you're going to see this economy come roaring back.' 'This is the path to more jobs and more take-home pay and a brighter future for you and your kids,' Romney added. 'And I know that because I've seen it.'"

York notes: "Romney was clear, sharp and focused. If he stays that way, he'll likely quiet some of his GOP critics, at least for a while."

Of course, Romney's "five things" were short on details. But, the idea is an acknowledgement that he needs to start filling in the gaps about who he is and what he believes in before the caricature that Democrats have created ultimately defines him.

Heywood murder: China sets Bo Xilai wife trial date

Heywood murder: China sets Bo Xilai wife trial date

3 August 2012 By .bbc.co.uk
Gu Kailai, wife of Chinese politician Bo Xilai, will go on trial for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood next Thursday, lawyers say.

Prosecutors announced last week that Ms Gu and Zhang Xiaojun, employed at Mr Bo's home, had been charged with intentional homicide.

Gu Kailai and Bo Xilai (file photo from 2007)Mr Heywood was found dead in a hotel in Chongqing on 15 November 2011.

The alleged murder of Mr Heywood triggered Mr Bo's downfall in a scandal that has rocked Chinese politics.

The trial is expected to take place in the eastern city of Hefei, even though the crime allegedly took place hundreds of miles to the west in the city of Chongqing.

Legal experts have previously told BBC Chinese that authorities would have had concerns about the political influence Mr Bo and his family may still exert in Chongqing and whether that would affect a fair trial.

Local officials initially said Mr Heywood died of excessive drinking, but the government announced in April it was investigating Mr Bo's wife in connection with the case.

The exact nature of Mr Heywood's role and his relations with the Bo family have been the subject of much speculation inside and outside China. At the very least, there were close business contacts between the Bo family and Mr Heywood.

Mr Bo, the former high-flying leader of the south-western Chinese megacity of Chongqing, was sacked in March and is under investigation for allegedly flouting Communist Party rules.

He made his name tackling corruption in Chongqing and had been expected to be elected to an important position during the once-in-a-decade leadership change due at the Communist Party congress this autumn.

Analysts say the authorities are keen to resolve the case quickly before China undergoes that politically sensitive transition.
