Facebook Makes It Official: An External Advertising Network Is Coming Soon

Facebook Makes It Official: An External Advertising Network Is Coming Soon
By Mathew Ingram on November 26, 2012

A view of an Apple iPad and iPhone displaying the Facebook app's splash screen

There’s been a lot of discussion over the past few days about the recent changes to Facebook’s (FB) privacy and governance policies—including the revelation that (gasp!) Facebook is not actually a democracy—but one element of the new rules has gotten less attention than it probably should: Namely, the giant social network is going to use the data it has about your likes and dislikes to show you ads outside of Facebook. This is the first real confirmation that the company is going to roll out an advertising network that extends beyond just its own walled garden, and it could turn out to be one of the biggest factors in the success or failure of Facebook’s revenue-growth strategy.

According to figures released by research firm Gartner, PC maker HP was knocked off its perch when Lenovo claimed the top-spot in worldwide PC sales.

However, the computer firm was not about to back down quietly in the face of its Chines rival; instead, HP has gone for Gartner's jugular .. albeit politely not mentioning the research firm by name.

Toyota has recalled 138,000 cars in the UK because of a potential fault with the master switch for the electric windows.
It affects certain RAV4, Auris, Yaris and Corolla models built between September 2006 and December 2008.
There has been one reported case in the UK but no reported accidents related to this issue.
The recall comes only days after Japanese rival Honda recalled 77,000 CR-V cars made at its Swindon factory between 2002 and 2006, due to an electrical fault with the master switch for the electric windows that could potentially lead to a fire.
Toyota says that the power window master switch (PWMS) on the driver's door may over time begin to feel uneven or notchy when it is operated. The switch is not designed to be lubricated with commercially available lubricants and that application of these could lead to overheating and/or

SEOUL — Samsung Electronics reported a record quarterly profit of 8.1 trillion South Korean won, nearly double the figure of last year, as strong sales of high-end televisions and Galaxy smartphones more than offset reduced orders for chips and screens from Apple, its main rival and leading customer.

Most analysts, however, expect a run of four record quarters — the most recent worth $7.3 billion — to end in December, as the South Korean group, one of the world’s leading makers of smartphones, televisions and memory chips, increases its marketing, countering the new Apple iPhone 5 and other products in a crowded smartphone market, valued at $200 billion globally.

Facebook on Thursday announced a new tool that offers users the opportunity to buy gifts for one another. It is the company’s latest test of whether users are willing to spend money on the social network – and it remains to be seen whether it will make money for the company.

The gifts range from cupcakes to sunglasses. Facebook will earn a slice of the proceeds from each transaction; a company spokesman declined to say how much but said each partner company had a different revenue-sharing arrangement.

All Cars Will Be Driverless

All Cars Will Be Driverless in 20 Years: Bob Lutz
By Morgan Korn | Daily Ticker

Driverless cars are no longer science fiction — they're reality.
California became the second state (the first was Nevada) to approve autonomous, self-driving cars on the road. Jerry Brown, governor of California, signed the bill at Google's (GOOG) headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., on Tuesday.
Google has trumpeted its computer-controlled cars and claims that its modified, driverless Toyota (TM) Priuses and Lexus RX 450h cars have logged more than 300,000 miles on busy highways and roads without an accident. (Google did say that one of its Priuses was involved in a minor accident last year).

Apple supplier’s factory in China resumes production after brawl highlights labor tensions

Apple supplier’s factory in China resumes production after brawl highlights labor tensions
By Associated Press, Published: September 25,2012
BEIJING — A factory in China owned by the manufacturer of Apple’s iPhones resumed production Tuesday after a brawl by workers highlighted tensions that labor groups say were worsened by the pressure of a new iPhone launch.

Foxconn Technology Group and police said the cause of the unrest Sunday night was under investigation, but labor activists said the rollout of the iPhone 5 has led to longer working hours and more pressure on workers. Foxconn and police said as many as 2,000 employees were involved in the brawl and 40 people were reported injured.
The iPhone 5 debuted last week in the United States and eight other countries and Apple has a three- to four-week backlog of online orders. Foxconn has declined to say whether its one-day suspension of production Monday in Taiyuan might affect supplies. It did not respond to a request for comment on the labor groups’ claims.

iPhone 5 ! and iPhone10?

The iPhone 5 is coming ... will there be an iPhone 10?
By David Goldman @CNNMoneyTech September 11, 2012

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Industry analysts are already predicting that Apple's iPhone 5, widely expected to be unveiled on Wednesday, will be the best-selling smartphone of all time. Each new iPhone has outsold the previous version, and the iconic device has been the top-selling mobile phone since its 2007 debut.
That raises the question: How much longer can Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) keep this up? Will there be an iPhone 10?

Apple, Google In Talks to End Dispute
By Richard Davies
Are two technology giants ready to end their bitter patent dispute? The CEOs of Apple and Google are reported to be in talks about a range of intellectual property issues, including copyright infringement. Bloomberg News says Tim Cook and Larry Page “spoke by phone last week and are expected to talk more soon,” according to a person with knowledge of the conversations. Apple has sued several companies that use Google’s Android software. Google has not been the target of an Apple lawsuit, but competition between the two tech giants has heated up in recent years as the market has shifted from PCs and laptops to mobile devices. Motorola Mobility, the smartphone maker now owned by Google, filed a complaint against Apple, claiming infringement of several patents including one linked to Siri, Apple’s popular voice-

Facebook has radically increased the speed of the iPhone and iPad versions of its app by dumping the HTML5 version it used for one written in Apple's own Objective-C code to improve the mobile experience - and, potentially, begin making money from phone users.

The move, says Facebook's Jonathan Dann, "signals a shift in how Facebook is building mobile products, with a focus on digging deep into individual platforms". The blog post hints that versions written specifically for Android and other mobile platforms are on the way.
