Justin Bieber was issued a speeding ticket today, after allegedly driving recklessly on the Hollywood (101) Freeway, authorities said.

Bieber, 18, was pulled over about 10:45 a.m. after allegedly speeding on the freeway between Coldwater Canyon and Vineland avenues, according to the California Highway Patrol.

(This wasn't far from where he had a minor fender-bump last year where he owns a condo in Studio City.)

"Two vehicles were seen traveling in a reckless manner southbound on US 101 near Coldwater Canyon," the CHP said in a statement. "It appeared the second of the two vehicles was chasing the vehicle in the front. A traffic stop was made on the lead vehicle, and the driver was identified as 18-year-old Justin Bieber,'' the CHP reported. Yahoo, Facebook Settle Patent Dispute

Yahoo, Facebook Settle Patent Dispute
By Cameron Scott, IDG News Jul 7, 2012
Yahoo and Facebook announced Friday they have settled a high-profile patent dispute with a deal that analysts said would likely be good for both sides.
As part of the agreement, Yahoo and Facebook have signed a cross-licensing deal granting access to each others' patent portfolios, they said in a joint statement. They've also forged an advertising partnership and will expand an existing content distribution agreement.

Yahoo sued Facebook in March under the leadership of former CEO Scott Thompson. It accused Facebook of infringing patents covering technologies related to social networking, advertising, privacy, site customization and communications. Facebook's News Feed and the way it handles privacy were both in violation of Yahoo's patents, Yahoo contended.

Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Retina Display)
Word is starting to hit the airwaves that Apple has officially withdrawn its 39 products from EPEAT certification – that's the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, a program that awards products with "gold," "silver," or "bronze" classification based on how well they meet a variety of environmental-themed criteria including recyclability, energy consumption, and environmental impact.
That sounds like a lot of green gobbledygook, but it's a classification program that Apple appeared to take seriously up until the company's request for removal (announced early last month). In fact, Apple still touts its iMacs' EPEAT Gold status on their official product page although, as The Verge's Bryan Bishop notes, the gold status logo is now conspicuously absent

WASHINGTON – More than $6 million has been spent on TV ads seeking to influence the presidential election – but it’s not the presidential campaigns themselves that are doing the spending.

An analysis from the Michigan Campaign Finance Network, based in Lansing, showed Friday that neither President Barack Obama nor Republican rival Mitt Romney has paid for TV advertising in Michigan since the contested GOP primary in the state – won by Romney – on Feb. 28.

By Matthew Black, special to CBC News Posted: Jul 5, 2012   Malware, the malicious viruses and bugs employed by computer hackers to con and annoy, has become more prevalent in Canada than ever before, according to computer industry research. In fact, the volume of malicious software detected in 2011 was up 41 per cent over the previous year, said Dean Turner, director of Symantec Intelligence Group. At the same time, the complexity of computer viruses is also increasing. Long gone are the days when they were nuisances that scuttled Word documents. "The long and short of it is that today's malware is incredibly sophisticated," said Turner, who estimated that 90 per cent of it is used for cybercrime,

Highways buckled across the country, the waters of Lake Michigan were unusually warm for this time of year and even a minor train derailment outside Washington was blamed on heat as the hot weather gripping much of the country only worsened Saturday.

Temperatures of more than 100 degrees were forecast in Philadelphia and excessive heat warnings were issued for several states in the Midwest as the days of smothering heat piled on, accompanied by severe storms that have knocked out power in spots from Michigan to the East Coast.

Most notable was last weekend's sudden and severe storm that drenched the mid-Atlantic region, where thousands remained without electricity a week later.

This is the week Kobe Bryant went from acknowledging his advancing age to accepting it. Yes, there is a difference. It's one thing to say and joke that you're old; it's another thing to let that fact dictate your actions. I can't imagine Bryant teaming up with Steve Nash as recently as, say, 2010. But that's what two more years and two early playoff exits will do. They create urgency, which creates unlikely alliances.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The service sector in June grew at the slowest pace in nearly two and a half years, more evidence that the economy has weakened.
But those same companies increased hiring last month, supporting other data that shows job growth may have picked up last month.

The Institute for Supply Management said Thursday that its index of nonmanufacturing activity fell to 52.1 last month, from a May reading of 53.7.

The reading was the lowest since January 2010. Still, any reading above 50 indicates expansion. The sector has grown now for 30 straight months.

Service companies employ about 90 percent of the economy. They include retail, construction, financial services, health care and hotel businesses, among others. The service sector includes low-paying positions in retailing and restaurants but also covers higher-paying jobs in professions like information

Brazilian Navy sailors pick a piece of debris from Air France flight AF447 out of the Atlantic Ocean in this handout file photo distributed by the Navy on June 8, 2009.The grim reality emerging from the Air France Flight 447 disaster is that the Airbus A330 jetting from Rio to Paris slammed into the dark sea – killing all 228 passengers and crew – after pilot-induced loss of control when there was nothing significantly wrong with the plane.

The disaster was unprecedented. Never before has a modern airliner been wrenched by its pilots into such position that it – literally – stopped flying, leaving its doomed passengers in a freefall to their deaths while the confounded flight crew debated what they had done and needed to do.
There was no terrorist bomb, nor a lightning strike that destroyed the plane’s electronics, although wild media speculation suggested the latter two in the early days after Air France 447 mysteriously

Physicists Find Elusive Particle Seen as Key to the Universe

File:CMS Higgs-event.jpgASPEN, Colo. — Signaling a likely end to one of the longest, most expensive searches in the history of science, physicists said Wednesday that they had discovered a new subatomic particle that looks for all the world like the Higgs boson, a key to understanding why there is diversity and life in the universe.
Like Omar Sharif materializing out of the shimmering desert as a man on a camel in “Lawrence of Arabia,” the elusive boson has been coming slowly into view since last winter, as the first signals of its existence grew until they practically jumped off the chart.

“I think we have it,” said Rolf-Dieter Heuer, the director general of CERN, the multinational research center headquartered in Geneva. The agency is home to the Large Hadron Collider, the immense particle accelerator that produced the new data by colliding protons. The findings were announced by two separate teams. Dr. Heuer called the discovery “a historic milestone.”

Scientists have discovered the world’s smallest known fly: a tiny, parasitic native of Thailand that appears to decapitate its host ants.
“Here’s something barely visible to the naked eye and it has wings, eyes and complete organ systems,” said the insect’s discoverer, Brian V. Brown, curator of entomology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

The fly, Euryplatea nanaknihali, is less than two-hundredths of an inch long — one-fifteenth the size of a housefly and one-fifth that of a fruit fly. It was collected as part of the Thailand Inventory Group for Entomological Research, a project involving more than 100 scientists around the world. Dr. Brown describes it in the July issue of Annals of the Entomological Society of America.

Millions are staring down the prospect of several more days without electricity in the middle of a heat wave after severe storms over the weekend.
Food is beginning to spoil, and many people have to charge modern conveniences like cellphones in their cars or at libraries. Utility companies say they are bringing in crews from around the country to help, but they still say it could be several days before everyone has electricity again.
By Sunday evening, the number of those without power had dipped to about 2.7 million customers, down from more than 3 million at the peak of the outages.

Well-known sites like Netflix, Pinterest and Instagram were not accessible for hours. There was little information for customers about what had happened, or even whether user data was safe.

Sprinters Agree on Runoff to Determine Olympic Berth

EUGENE, Ore. — After a week of waiting amid a swirl of rumors, Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh chose a Monday runoff to decide who would claim the final spot to represent the United States in the women’s 100 meters at the Olympics. Their decision ends one of the stranger finishes in track history, one that involved two runners who train together, share a coach, run in the same races and finished tied with an Olympic berth at stake.
Discussions involving the runners, their coach, USA Track and Field officials and others began Saturday and continued on Sunday. It was announced Sunday afternoon, on the last day of the Olympic trials, that the runners had agreed to the runoff, which will be held Monday night.

The result is a compromise that allows USA Track and Field, the sport’s national governing body, to send a final roster of team members to the United States Olympic Committee on Monday, while also giving Felix and Tarmoh an additional day to rest after their 200-meter final Saturday night. Though a winner-take-all race, presumably in front of a smaller crowd, may lessen somewhat the pressure on the athletes, it may be offset by NBC Sports Network’s decision to televise the race live; coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern.

Blake Wins 200 Meters, Goes 2 for 2 Vs Bolt

KINGSTON, Jamaica July 2, 2012
No posing, no salutes, no fist pumping. Yohan Blake simply paced in front of the jam-packed grandstand at National Stadium and stared up into the crowd, letting all those fans soak in a nice, long look.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the man to beat at the London Olympics.

In a result that can no longer be considered a surprise, Blake beat Usain Bolt in the 200 meters at Jamaican Olympic trials Sunday, finishing in 19.80 seconds to edge the world-record holder by 0.03.

When it was over, Bolt was the first one to approach his training partner and buddy and give him a big bear hug. Moments later, Bolt was down on the ground, getting his right hamstring stretched out, while Blake was celebrating — rather modestly — in front of the grandstand.

Fragments of ancient pottery found in southern China turn out to date back 20,000 years, making them the world’s oldest known pottery — 2,000 to 3,000 years older than examples found in East Asia and elsewhere.
The ceramics probably consisted of simple concave vessels that were likely used for cooking food, said Ofer Bar-Yosef, an archaeologist at Harvard and an author of the study, which appears in the journal Science.

“What it seems is that in China, the making of pottery started 20,000 years ago and never stopped,” he said. “The Chinese kitchen was always based on cooking and steaming; they never made, as in other parts of Asia, breads.”
