Microsoft starts taking orders for $14.99 Windows 8 upgrade
Some users may have to enter their Windows 7 product key; may be an anti-piracy move
By Gregg Keizer
August 21, 2012
Computerworld - Microsoft on Monday began taking orders for the $14.99 Windows 8 upgrade promised to customers who purchased a new Windows 7-powered PC in the last 11 weeks.

People who bought an eligible Windows 7 machine starting June 2 can now file an online form to queue up for the Oct. 26 delivery of the upgrade.

The upgrade to Windows 8 Pro costs $14.99, more than in past cycles when they were often free, but less than the $39.99 for users who upgrade older systems to the new operating system.

Facebook’s Ambition Collides With Harsh Market

Facebook’s Ambition Collides With Harsh Market

MENLO PARK, Calif. — Inside Facebook’s headquarters, a red-and-white poster affixed to a wall asks bluntly: “What Could Go Wrong?”
Below, in black ink, someone has scrawled in tiny letters: “Everything.”

The poster, one of several displayed across this sprawling campus, is part of the company’s risk-taking start-up culture, as is the fact that management has not pulled down the defaced copy. But as the company loses its luster on Wall Street, this exchange on the wall points to the improbable turn that Facebook’s fairy tale has taken.

Once hailed as the most valuable technology company to hit Wall Street, Facebook is now worth just over half what it was three months ago, with shares closing at $20.01 Monday. Wall Street analysts are openly wondering whether its chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, has the business skills to deliver on his promises.

Facebook’s troubles began in earnest with an exceptionally ambitious initial public offering. Even the grown-ups that Mr. Zuckerberg, 28, chose to run the business side of the company — Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operations officer, and David Ebersman, the chief financial officer — seem not to have been skilled enough to stave off that disaster. Nor were the bankers who handled the deal, including Goldman Sachs and Morgan

The good news: Consumers could soon have more options for bundling their wireless, Internet and cable TV services.
The bad news: If you were waiting for more competition — or lower prices — for broadband or wireless service, you could be waiting in vain.

Twitter API update places limits on third-party applications

Twitter API update places limits on third-party applications
Shane McGlaun, Aug 17th 2012
Twitter has gone official with changes that will land in version 1.1 of its API. Some of the changes will help twitter to reduce the number of spam accounts and bots that use the service, but the changes will also restrict third-party applications. Specifically, the changes to the new version of the API will place a limit on how often third-party twitter clients and other services are able to access information on twitter.

Mercedes, Lexus, Audi Sedans Earn Poor Crash-Test Ratings

Mercedes, Lexus, Audi Sedans Earn Poor Crash-Test Ratings
By Angela Greiling Keane on August 14, 2012
Most mid-sized luxury cars scored “marginal” or “poor” in an insurance industry group’s new frontal-crash test that differs from the U.S. government’s tests and simulates a particularly deadly type of accident.

Of the 11 models the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested, only the Volvo Car Corp. S60 and Honda Motor Co.’s Acura TL earned “good” ratings in a test simulating a so-called small-overlap crash, in which the front corner of a car hits a tree, utility pole or another vehicle. The Nissan Motor Co. Infiniti G scored “acceptable.” Volvo is owned by China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co.

App.net hits $500,000 target: now can it rival Twitter with a paid-for service?
Dalton Caldwell reckons that people will pay for an ad-free real-time social networking service - and now has half a million dollars' funds to prove it, from around 10,000 users. Next: winning in the attention economy

By guardian.co.uk
Would you pay to use Twitter? A service called App.net has just indicated that at least some people would, by hitting a target of raising $500,000 in funding from individuals paying $50, $100 or $1000 to set up a Twitter clone where "users and developers come first, not advertisers".

The brainchild of Dalton Caldwell, a San Francisco-based developer who was one of the people behind the "web 2.0" resurgence in 2006, the scheme hit its target funding on Sunday evening more than a day ahead of its deadline. At the time of writing 7,448 people are offering to pay the base $50 level for access to post to the service, 2,010 paying $100 to be developers with access to back-end functionality, and 59

YouTube to skirt new Google search demotion rules for pirated content

YouTube to skirt new Google search demotion rules for pirated content
Video sharing side to escape new algorithm
By Chris Smith 2012/8/12
YouTube to skirt new Google search demotion rules for pirated content
Google's new piracy-fighting search algorithm, which downgrades illegal content, is unlikely to affect its YouTube service.
The company announced late last week that it was changing the way it ranks search results, in order to punish sites that are consistently accused of copyright infringement.
If a site racks up enough DCMA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) strikes then it'll be demoted within Google Search. Google is disclosing a running total of the sites with the most strikes against it.
However, within its reporting form, Google has issued a special message, exempting YouTube from the process.
Naturally, YouTube is the home of much of the web's illegally uploaded content, but the form directs users with YouTube complaints to a different complaint mechanism.
No demotions for user-generated sites

It appears that this is because when a video is flagged for removal in YouTube, it already counts as a takedown, whereas that's not the case with external sites.
Google says: "We're treating YouTube like any other site in search rankings. That said, we don't expect this change to demote results for popular user-generated content sites."

Android robot, GettyGoogle is updating a search app it makes for Apple iPhones and iPads so it does a better job of working out what people mean when they talk to it.

The app is being improved by linking it to Google's knowledge graph - a database of culture and concepts.

This will help the app understand the context of queries rather than just relying on keywords, said Google.

The update means it works just like voice-powered search on the Jelly Bean version of Google Android.

The Apple-made version of the YouTube app has been a staple on the iPhone's iOS since the device was first launched in 2007.

Apple said Google was developing its own version of the app which should appear soon.

'Worse experience'

Summary: It's no surprise that Apple has a new iPhone in the works, but the iPad Mini is a far more speculative.
By Adrian Kingsley-Hughes for Hardware 2.0 | July 31, 2012
Hot on the heels of more iPhone 5 component leaks, the rumor mill has now churned up a date for the release of both the highly anticipated iPhone 5 and an entirely new device -- the iPad Mini.

According to iMore -- and supported by AllThingsD and The Verge -- Apple has picked Wednesday, September 12th as the date that the Cupertino giant will unveil the new iPhone to the world.

There's little doubt that a new iPhone is incoming, although we won't know when we'll see it for sure until Apple starts sending out press invites and won't know for sure what new features it will have until we see it in Tim Cook's hand. There are strong claims that suggest the iPhone 5 will feature a 4-inch screen, have a metal backed chassis, feature a shrunken 19-

Samsung trounced iPhone twice over in Q2 smartphones claim analysts

Chris Davies, Jul 26th 2012
Samsung had an iPhone-squashing Q2 2012, analysts predict, shipping twice as many smartphones in the three month period, though the specter of the iPhone 5 is expected to put a dampener on Korean celebrations. The Galaxy S III helped lead Samsung to a total of 52m smartphones in Q2, Juniper Research estimates, more than double Apple’s market-disappointing 26m iPhone sales.
Of course, Samsung’s strength is its spread across the smartphone playing field. The Galaxy S III shipped 10m devices itself, but Samsung also has “Galaxy products hitting all price points” Juniper highlights, having “leveraged its global brand strength and the popularity of the Android OS to drive sales of smartphones in all price tiers.”
