Data-bucket Plans Like Verizon's Will Take Adjustment for Carriers, Users
Jun 12, 2012  By Stephen Lawson, IDG News
Carriers and subscribers have their eyes on the dollars and cents of multi-device data plans such as those set to launch at Verizon Wireless later this month, but for both sides, the new types of deals will also take some adjustment

The "family" plans Verizon announced on Tuesday are different from any previous offerings, including existing family plans in which several users share voice minutes. They are designed for one or a group of subscribers to connect as many as 10 devices to the network using one limited pool of data, with unlimited voice and text. The subscription is associated with a person or family rather than a device, and it can encompass tablets, laptops, USB modems and other devices as well as phones.

Starbucks' Food Fight
By Susan Berfield on June 12, 2012

Howard Schultz has a complicated relationship with food. As the chairman, chief executive officer, and president of Starbucks (SBUX), he has tried over the years to find just the right kinds of fresh food to sell in the company’s U.S. stores, which now number about 10,000. Schultz’s latest attempt involves the $100 million cash purchase of Bay Bread and its La Boulange bakery, whose products Starbucks will use to replace most of its current baked goods. “After more than 40 years, we will be able to say that we are bakers too,” Schultz said when he announced the deal on June 4.

For Ohio Pottery, a Small Revival

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio — Not that long ago, this little Ohio River town could call itself the pottery capital of the nation. Some four dozen pottery factories here “set America’s table,” as the locals liked to boast, churning out everything from fine china to chamber pots and employing a large majority of the work force.

But no longer. Global competition and economic collapse shattered the industry like a poorly executed tablecloth trick and turned East Liverpool into a desperate corner of the country. Median income is roughly one-third lower than the state average, and more than 10 percent of working-age residents are unemployed.

Global shares rise on higher U.S. market, Europe worries cap

By Chikako Mogi
TOKYO | Tue Jun 12, 2012

(Reuters) - Asian shares rose on Wednesday, following gains in European and U.S. markets where bargain hunters bought beaten down stocks, but markets remained vulnerable to the euro zone's debt woes as Spanish yields hit record highs on worries over banks.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS inched up 0.2 percent, after Wall Street stocks gained more than 1 percent on Tuesday, led by cyclical sectors.

Japan's Nikkei average .N225 opened up 0.2 percent. .T

Asset prices have see-sawed as optimism and disappointment have taken turns by the day, reflecting a high level of unease in markets about whether contagion from Spain's banking crisis can be contained and whether Greece's June 17 election will see it stay in the euro bloc.

Risk appetite has been curbed by a lack of details in a loan agreement to help Spain's banks recapitalize, and concerns that the scheme could further aggravate Madrid's fast-rising public debts and force it to seek bailouts similar to those for Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

Spain's 10-year bond yield rose to 6.86 percent on Tuesday, surpassing peaks seen in November last year to hit the highest since the 1999 launch of the euro.

That capped the euro, which traded at $1.2495, off Tuesday's low of $1.24428.

"There is nothing substantial in the recovery in sentiment, and it appears only to be supported by hopes Europeans will take more measures to ensure the Spanish aid will work while seeking to buy time for Greece," said Yuji Saito, director of foreign exchange at Credit Agricole Bank in Tokyo.

"There might also be some hopes the G20 will put pressure on Europe. Given so much uncertainty, players are quick to take profits whenever there is a rebound," he said.

Despite a huge amount of positions betting on the euro's further decline, the currency's downside has been limited by options lined up around $1.25 as well as repatriation ahead of the half-year end in June by European financial institutions and companies, Saito said.

Speaking ahead of a June 18-19 summit of Group of 20 leaders in Mexico, Mexican President Felipe Calderon said on Tuesday European powers must quickly finalize plans to support Spanish banks, and said he expected important progress to be made in resolving the 2-1/2 year-long crisis.

Europeans, on the other hand, did little to soothe investor jitters, with Austria's finance minister saying Italy may need a financial rescue because of its high borrowing costs, while the Dutch finance minister said the euro zone was "still far from stable".

The European Central Bank said it stood ready to act should the situation in the euro zone deteriorate further.

U.S. crude eased 0.3 percent to $83.09 a barrel, after hitting a 2012 low of $81.07 in intraday trading, its lowest since October 6. Brent crude was off 0.1 percent at $97.08 a barrel, after settling at $97.14, the lowest settlement since January 2011.

The cost of insuring against corporate and sovereign defaults in Asia eased slightly on Wednesday, with the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index narrowing by 3 basis points.

Pujols' hit helps Angels beat Dodgers 3-2

Published June 12, 2012 Associated Press

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly rolled the dice and Albert Pujols made him pay.
The Angels had Mike Trout on second base representing the go-ahead run in the ninth inning with Pujols at the plate and first base open, but Mattingly decided against walking him and pitching to cleanup hitter Mark Trumbo.
Pujols muscled a broken-bat single into left field with two outs in the top of the ninth inning on a 3-1 pitch off Kenley Jansen, lifting the Los Angeles Angels to 3-2 victory over the Dodgers on Monday night.

The Kings are NHL champions for the first time, and all the men in black played a role in this Tinseltown blockbuster.

Civil War photos: Help sought to solve old mystery

June 11, 2012 from cbs news
RICHMOND, Va. — The names of the two little girls are an enduring mystery, their images found among crumpled bodies on Civil War battlefields. Each is posed primly on chairs, ringlets cascading past the rouged cheeks of one, the other dressed in a frilly hoop dress.
But no one knows their identities of the girls in the photographs, nor the stories they might tell.

The photograph of one girl was found between the bodies of two soldiers — one Union, one Confederate, at Port Royal, Va., 150 years ago this June. The other was retrieved from a slain Union soldier's haversack in 1865 on a Virginia farm field days before a half-decade of blood-letting would end with a surrender signed not far away at Appomattox.

Though photography was in its infancy when the war broke out, its use was widespread. Many soldiers carried photographs of loved ones into battle and for the first time, photographic images of war were available — and the Museum of the Confederacy has its own vast collection of images today, many of

Rafael Nadal prevails in turf war for seventh French Open title

The Spanish clay-court master defeats No. 1 Novak Djokovic, 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, in the completion of a final postponed Sunday because of rain. Nadal's seven titles are a men's record at French OpenRafael Nadal

PARIS -- Only one man could answer history's summons to the court at Roland Garros on Monday, and his name had been engraved on the winner's trophy six times already.

For the seventh, a feat no male player before him had achieved, Rafael Nadal roared back from a break of serve down in the fourth set to win a rain-delayed French Openmen's final Monday, powering past Novak Djokovic, 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Fittingly, the sun finally broke through the clouds as the Spaniard closed in on victory, which came when Djokovic double-faulted on match point after the two had been back on court for less than an hour.

Nadal, the defending champion, demonstrated that, though ranked behind his Serbian opponent at No. 2, he remains the world's best tennis player on clay, at present and arguably of all time. The win lifted him above the record of six French titles he shared with Swedish legend Bjorn Borg and thwarted Djokovic's attempt to make history by becoming the first man in 43 years to win four Grand Slam tournaments in a row.

REUTERS/Saul Loeb/Pool(Reuters) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has voiced deep concern over sectarian violence in Myanmar, unrest that threatens to endanger democratic and economic reforms in the country after decades of military-ruled isolation.

Clinton and the European Union, which both recently suspended economic sanctions against Myanmar to recognize and encourage its transition to democracy, have appealed to the nation's rulers to calm the situation and bring reconciliation.

Tensions between Buddhists and Muslim Rohingyas, a stateless people, turned violent in Myanmar's northwest over the past week, after the gang rape and murder of a Buddhist woman, widely blamed on Muslims, sparked bloody reprisals.

Flame virus linked to Stuxnet: researchers
June 12, 2012
Eugene Kaspersky, whose lab discovered the Flame virus that has attacked computers in Iran and elsewhere in the Middle East. The Flame computer virus which has been raging in the Middle East has strong links to Stuxnet, a malware program widely believed to have been developed by the United States or Israel, a security firm said Monday.
Kaspersky, the Russian computer security firm credited with discovering Flame last month, said its research shows the two programs share certain portions of code, suggesting some ties between two separate groups of programmers.
Kaspersky researcher Alexander Gostev said in a blog post that a first examination made it appear the two programs were unrelated.
"But it turns out we were wrong," he wrote. "Our research unearthed some previously unknown facts that completely transform the current view of how Stuxnet was created and its link with Flame."
Gostev said Flame, even though it was discovered just recently, appears to predate Stuxnet, which was created in 2009.

The median U.S. household lost nearly 39% of its wealth from 2007 to 2010, the Federal Reserve said Monday, emphasizing anew the impact of the financial crisis and the recession on ordinary Americans.
Middle-class families took the biggest hit to their net worth during the crunch because much of their wealth was in their homes, whose values plunged during the recession and in its aftermath, the Fed report said. Wealthier families saw a smaller drop in their incomes, but nowhere near as much impact on their net worth.

WWDC 2012: What to expect

This year's conference, the first post-Steve Jobs, could be the biggest yet

By Michael deAgonia
June 10, 2012
Computerworld - On Monday, Apple CEO Tim Cook will kick off Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. At its most basic, WWDC gives developers a rare chance to speak directly with Apple engineers about their coding efforts and learn about new features presented during the opening keynote.
But WWDC has become so much more than that, and this year's conference looks to be a bigger deal than usual. Not only does it allow Cook to highlight Apple's direction for the next year, but also lets him showcase new hardware, talk up OS X Mountain Lion and the next version of iOS and get developers enthused about the company's development platform.

Ohio's job growth doesn't guarantee an Obama win

The nation's unemployment rate of 8.2 percent may sink President Barack Obama's re-election bid, but one detail brightens his hopes. About 10 battleground states will decide the election, and seven of them have employment levels that beat the U.S. average.
That doesn't guarantee a second term, of course. But it's a reminder that the national rate, from a purely political standpoint, is not necessarily the be-all, end-all statistic.
Most of the states are led by Republican governors eager to highlight their progress in creating jobs. That complicates GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's claim that the economy has been so mismanaged that Obama deserves to be ousted.
In addition, a chief Romney criticism, that Obama is hindering energy production, is undermined by robust drilling for natural gas that's creating jobs and some wealthy

Results of the first round of legislative elections on Sunday showed that a trio of leftist parties led by Hollande’s Socialists finished on top with 46.3% of the vote, outpacing the outgoing conservative majority, which only garnered 33.9%. Analysts say this initial tally makes it likely the left will come away from second-round polling on June 17 with a commanding hold on parliament—leaving Hollande with a freer hand to pass pro-growth and socially progressive policies that conservatives had promised to impede if they retained their legislative control.

plane.jpgThe sixth family member of a plane crash in Florida's Polk County has been found. The body of 13-year-old Boston Bramlage was found about a half mile away from the scene of the crash, where the rest of his family was discovered.
"Friday afternoon, at 2:20pm, we located the missing young man," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. "He was not in the plane when the plane hit the ground, he was thrown from the aircraft while it was coming to the ground. We've had several different witnesses tell us it was flat and it was rotating."
Investigators say it appears the right wing of the plane somehow separated when the plane was at about 25,000 feet. The Sheriff said Boston Bramlage was catapulted from the plane before it disappeared from radar and crashed.
"The pilot of another aircraft heard the pilot of this aircraft announce a mayday, gave his call sign, but was not specific about the nature of the emergency," said Tim Monville, a Senior Air Safety Investigator with the NTSB.
The NTSB said about six feet of the right wing is still missing.

Mubarak's condition worsens

June 11, 2012
CAIRO: Hosni Mubarak is slipping in and out of consciousness eight days after the ousted Egyptian leader was sent to prison to begin serving a life sentence, a security official said.
With rumours of the former president's death spreading rapidly, authorities granted his wife, former first lady Suzanne Mubarak, and the couple's two daughters-in-law special permission to visit him in Cairo's Torah prison early yesterday morning.
''The former president's health is in decline but now it's stable in its deteriorated state,'' the official said.
Since his wife's visit, Mubarak has suffered from an irregular heartbeat and required assistance in breathing.
The official said the former president now lives only on liquids and yoghurt. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media.
Mubarak's health is reported to have collapsed since his June 2 conviction for failing to stop the killing of protesters during the uprising that overthrew him last year.

X-ray beam
An international team of scientists has generated the first laser-like beams of X-rays from a tabletop device.
Most of today's X-ray lasers require so much power they rely on facilities the size of sports stadiums.
This has prompted efforts to build a cost-effective and reasonably sized X-ray laser.
The development, reported in Science journal, could pave the way for super high-resolution imaging that could peer into a cell or a chemical reaction.
"Because X-ray wavelengths are 1,000 times shorter than visible light and they penetrate materials, these coherent X-ray beams promise revolutionary new capabilities," said co-author Margaret Murnane, professor of physics at the University of Colorado in Boulder, US.
