A College Degree Doesn’t Guarantee a Good Job: Gary Shilling
By Bernice Napach | Daily Ticker – Fri, Aug 10, 2012

Anyone who has a kid in college knows that August can be the cruelest month. That's when the bill for the fall semester is due and usually it's higher than the bill for any previous semester.
Over the past decade college tuition and fees have been increasing much faster than the rate of inflation. The average annual cost for tuition, fees and room and board is $38,600 for a private 4-year college and $17,000 for a public 4-year college (for out-of state residents it's $30,000), according to

LONDON – Women. Can't live with 'em, wouldn't have a prayer in the medal race without 'em.
Through Wednesday, the USA had won 34 gold medals at the Olympics. The women accounted for 23 of them. Take away swimming, and the American men had three. They went medal-less in boxing (an historical first) and put nobody in the men's 400-meter final (ditto).

But the women have dominated, from the halls of gymnastics to the shores of beach volleyball. Because Wednesday figured to be another highlight reel, a diary seemed in order. A day in the life of American Olympic women on a roll.

Obama/Romney negative ads going to new extremes

By Nancy Cordes
(CBS News) WASHINGTON -- The presidential campaign ad season is already in high-gear.

The campaigns and political "super PACS" are flooding the airwaves, and critics on both sides say facts don't back up the charges made in the ads.

The claims in some of the ads have been so dubious, they're making some people in both parties uncomfortable.

Even President Obama and his presumptive Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, have condemned some of the ads -- but only the ones from the other side.

One such ad, from Priorities USA Action, a top outside group supporting Mr. Obama, features former Missouri steelworker Joe Soptic saying, "When Mitt Romney and Bain closed the plant, I lost my

HONG KONG — Signs that the Chinese economy is sputtering mounted Friday, in the form of dismally feeble trade data that fanned expectations that Beijing would soon step up its efforts to buttress growth before a key leadership transition this autumn.
China’s giant economy has emerged as a key driver of global growth, and hopes are high that rising affluence, urbanization and development will help mitigate the weakness of the European and U.S. economies.

The turmoil in Europe and the anemic pace of economic growth in the United States have, however,

That's all quite impressive, but that's not their truly remarkable achievement of these Games. No, that would be something far grander, cutting to the very essence of their sport, to be remembered long after they have hung up their bikinis: These two made us take beach volleyball seriously.
