Over 100 years ago, Americans began to celebrate Labor Day to honor our nation's working people and the prosperity they contribute to society. We also celebrate the hard-earned rights workers won for all Americans decades ago, including the right to organize at the workplace. Unfortunately, the many labor rights we take for granted today are at risk due to policies that make working people more vulnerable. Given the loss of millions of American jobs, those of us with work feel fortunate. But even if you have a job, workplace problems don't evaporate, and those of us who stand up for our rights are increasingly told that this most American of activities is no longer protected under the law.

CBS/AP) NEW ORLEANS — Days after Isaac hammered Louisiana and Mississippi with winds and rain, much of a parish southeast of New Orleans was still flooded and thousands are without power.

Thousands of evacuees remained at shelters or bunked with friends or relatives.

"My family is split up," said Angela Serpas, from severely flooded Braithwaite in Plaquemines Parish. Serpas and her daughter were staying with her in-laws while her husband and son were staying in Belle Chasse, a suburban area of the parish.

A wildfire that broke out in the Angeles National Forest has cut short the Labor Day holiday weekend for thousands of visitors who flock to the popular recreational attraction.

The fire broke out near a campground Sunday afternoon and quickly grew to 3,600 acres, or about 5½ square miles. It sent a huge cloud of smoke that could be seen from the coast to the desert inland.

Campgrounds that typically attract up to 12,000 visitors on the holiday weekend, as well as rehabilitation centers and the private community of Camp Williams Resort above the city of Glendora, were evacuated, forest spokeswoman L'Tanga Watson said.

LeAnn Rimes is fighting back against two women whom she claims illegally tape-recorded her during a phone conversation without her consent.

Court documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday – one day after Rimes voluntarily entered a facility to "cope with anxiety and stress" – claim that Kimberly and Lexi Smiley "conspired to spitefully ensure that out-of-context excerpts of that recording would be disseminated to the public."

The documents state that Rimes does not know the true names of the defendants, so is using their fictitious names.

The conversation – which went viral and was still online as of early Thursday evening – has Rimes attempting to keep the peace between herself and a Tweeter who defends Rimes's husband Eddie Cibrian's ex-wife, Brandi Glanville.

In the documents, which state that the Smiley women's actions have caused the country singer "emotional distress," Rimes seeks to be "compensated for the harm that she has endured as a result of the defendants' malicious actions."

Coroner's officials have determined that Sylvester Stallone's son Sage, who was found dead in his California home on July 13, had a heart condition.

Sage, 36, died from natural causes due to a heart condition that causes blockage of the arteries, coroner's officials said Thursday. No other factors were involved, reports AP. Toxicology results showed only a minimal amount of hydrocodone in his system.

A growing number of children are swallowing batteries, especially circular "button batteries," leading to thousands of emergency room visits each year and, in a few cases, deaths, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
From 1997 through 2010, nearly 30,000 young children up to age 4 were taken to emergency rooms for battery-related injuries, the report said, with more than half the cases involving button batteries.
Fourteen deaths from battery-related injuries were reported over that period in children ages 7 months to 3 years old.

Las Vegas drivers are seeing a surge in gas prices. Experts say they shouldn't be surprised about it.

"It's summer, people are traveling, the temperatures are very high and when there is a high demand for gas obviously the price goes up," said Cynthia Harris, spokesperson for AAA.

Over the past three weeks the price at the pumps has jumped nearly 30 cents a gallon in Las Vegas with the average price now at $3.70 a gallon.

That's still much cheaper than what motorists are paying in southern California. In Los Angeles according to AAA, prices are more than $4 a gallon.

But not everyone here is happy with our gas prices.

Police in New Jersey have reportedly shot and killed a man suspected of being involved in a deadly shootout inside a shopping plaza this morning.

Law enforcement officials say the three dead include the alleged gunman, according to WABC-TV.
Police responded to shots fired inside the Pathmark supermarket on Route 9 in Old Bridge, N.J., just before 4 a.m. There was a confrontation with the alleged gunman, WABC reported. There's no word on his motive.

An index of executive and consumer sentiment in the 17- nation euro area dropped to 86.1 from 87.9 in July, the European Commission in Brussels said today. That’s the lowest since August 2009. After announcing this week that Friday would be her last day on Good Morning America before she began an extended medical leave, Robin Roberts moved up the date of her departure to Thursday, reports ABC News

"I'm having to move up my schedule," the anchor, 51, said at the top of the show on Thursday. Roberts explained that she will first fly home to Mississippi to be with her ailing, 88-year-old mother, Lucimarian, and her family in the Hurricane Isaac zone.

Roberts will then be treated for myelodysplastic syndrome (commonly called "MDS") and is starting preparations to undergo a bone-marrow transplant.

Roberts's sister, Sally, donated the bone marrow, and, looking radiant but concerned for her sister, said on Thursday's show, "Recovery time is so quick."

This week, leading to Roberts's farewell, Good Morning America shared the stories of others battling MDS.

From overseeing the creation of beautiful breads, pastries and desserts for hotels and restaurants as an executive pastry chef to (surprisingly!) becoming a nuclear power reactor operator conducting procedures that start up or shut down the plant, having a college degree in these occupations is not mandatory.
Personal trainers, massage therapists, and handymen are also among the jobs where top earners with no college degree can receive annual pay that exceeds $100,000, according to PayScale.com. To compile this list, PayScale.com surveyed its salary and career database, covering about 12,000 jobs in over 1,000 industries.
