Los Angeles Dodgers' Andre Ethier, center, watches his ball go out for a two-run home run along with St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Joe Kelly during the third inning of their baseball game, Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, in Los Angeles.
LOS ANGELES -- The St. Louis Cardinals had a chance to put a little more distance between themselves and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL wild card race after getting home runs from Yadier Molina, Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday in a span of seven batters.

Then one swing by Luis Cruz changed that. Cruz greeted St. Louis reliever Edward Mujica with a first-pitch, three-run homer in the sixth inning, and the Cardinals lost 8-5.

Trevor Rosenthal (0-2) inherited a 4-3 lead from fellow rookie Joe Kelly after five innings and game up a leadoff single by Andre Ethier, who got the Dodgers back into the game in the third with a two-run homer. Rosenthal hit Hanley Ramirez on a 1-0 count two outs later.

"To me, Rosey's been throwing the ball as good as anybody we have right now," manager Mike Matheny said. "We've put him in higher-leverage situations, and he's thrown the ball well. We have quite a few guys down there, so there's lots of options. But I felt very good about him coming in. Rosey's the guy we wanted there."

WASHINGTON -The Federal Reserve wasn't just trying to drive down interest rates when it announced a third round of bond purchases Thursday.
It also wants to make people feel wealthier — and more willing to spend.

The idea is for the Fed's $40 billion-a-month in bond purchases to lower interest rates and cause stock and home prices to rise, creating a "wealth effect" that would boost the economy.

CHICAGO – Negotiators seeking an end to Chicago's teachers strike sound more hopeful than they have in weeks, announcing they have achieved a "framework" that could bring students back to the classroom by Monday.
But the leader of the teachers union cautions against assuming the nearly weeklong walkout is over until her members have seen the final offer in writing in a meeting scheduled for Sunday.

TMZ reports that Bynes was attempting to cover her face while driving her black BMW out of a parking lot on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. She then tapped the bumper of a white car in front of her. Both drivers left the scene without exchanging information.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The Green Bay Packers rattled and robbed Jay Cutler while Aaron Rodgers and Co. sputtered at times against the stout Chicago Bears defense.
So with all those stars on the field for the NFL's most storied rivalry, the biggest play of the day was a gutsy call for a perfectly executed fake field goal in Green Bay's 23-10 victory at Lambeau Field on Thursday.

More folks may be watching The Voice, but The X Factor is still the show with all the hype.
And the reason for that, simply, is Demi Lovato and Britney Spears.
While the judges wait for the next Melanie Amaro, Josh Krajcik or Rachel Crow to walk onstage (so far we've got Paige Thomas, Jason Brock and Carly Rose Sonenclar, not a bad start), all eyes are on the talent already sandwiched between Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid.

REUTERS/Gary Cameron(Reuters) - The U.S. government had nothing to do with a film about the Prophet Mohammad that has triggered anti-American protests in Muslim countries, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Thursday.
The film, apparently produced in the United States, sparked an attack on a U.S. mission in Libya on Tuesday that killed the ambassador and three other Americans. Clips posted on the Internet show an amateurish production portraying the Prophet Mohammad as a womanizer, a homosexual and a child abuser.

"The United States government had absolutely nothing to do with this video. We absolutely reject its content and message," Clinton said at the start of talks with senior Moroccan officials in Washington.

China sent six patrol boats to the East China Sea near disputed islands, in the latest stage of a confrontation with Japan after Tokyo nationalized the contended territory.

China’s Foreign Ministry explained in a statement early on Friday that the surveillance ships were carrying out “law enforcement over China’s maritime rights.”

“The Chinese side has taken completely justifiable actions to uphold its rights and interests,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, adding that the move was a “normal performance duty.”

Ben S. Bernanke for the first time pledged that the Federal Reserve will buy bonds until the economy gets closer to his goals, cementing his place as the Fed’s most innovative chairman and signaling the battle against unemployment eclipses any concerns about inflation for now.
The central bank yesterday announced its third round of large-scale asset purchases since 2008, with the difference that it didn’t set any limit on the ultimate amount it would buy or the duration of the program. Instead, Bernanke said stimulus will be expanded until the Fed sees “sustained improvement” in the labor market.

LIVING on an inflexible budget, one that teeters on the brink of poverty, is not what most people equate with retirement. But that is pretty much what anyone who lives solely on Social Security can expect.

According to the Social Security Administration, 23 percent of married couples and 46 percent of single people receive 90 percent or more of their income from Social Security. Furthermore, 53 percent of married couples and 74 percent of unmarried people receive half of their income or more from the program.

Census: Rich-poor gap widens

Census: Rich-poor gap widens
By Dennis Cauchon and Paul Overberg, USA TODAY
2012/9/13
The income of American households continued to shift dramatically in 2011, falling sharply for middle-income and working-age people while rising for top earners and seniors, the Census Bureau reported Wednesday.
Overall, median household income fell 1.5% to $50,054 last year, the fourth consecutive annual decline after adjusting for inflation, the bureau said. The typical household has lost ground in seven of the past 10 years and now takes in less cash than it did in 1996 when adjusting for inflation.
The annual income report is a key indicator of the economic health of the USA and its middle class. Median income is the middle point of households — half made more, half made less in 2011. Only a handful of groups did better last year:
•Affluent. The income for the top 5% of households — those making $186,000 or more — rose 5.3% last year, reflecting the growing value of highly educated professionals. Income gains were greatest among the top 1%, said David Johnson, chief of social, economic and housing statistics for the Census Bureau. There is a "widening of the gap between the top and the bottom," he said.
•Seniors. Those 65 and older saw household income rise 2% above inflation last year and 12.8% over the last decade, helped by the steadiness of Social Security checks.

Rocky S, who has dressed celebrities like Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra and more recently even Beyonce Knowles, says Spears should take advantage of her "amazing personality" and "strong attitude" to carry off "different kinds of outfits".

Yes, Curtis Granderson acknowledged late Wednesday night, he does check the scoreboard. The only reason, though, is because he is playing center field at Fenway Park this week and can hear the out-of-town digits sliding into their squares in the Green Monster.

“I get a chance to look at all of them,” Granderson said. “If there’s nothing going on, I can hear when they put the different numbers in.”

Granderson hung a few numbers of his own on the Yankees-Red Sox linescore behind left field. He homered twice to help the Yankees to a 5-4 victory, preserving their first-place tie with the Baltimore Orioles, who beat the Tampa Bay Rays at Camden Yards.

When his eyes were on the action, Granderson watched an impressive performance by Yankees starter David Phelps. After Jarrod Saltalamacchia tripled to Granderson’s center-field neighborhood, leading off the fifth, Phelps kept him stranded with a strikeout, a pop out and another strikeout.
